The large-scale earthworks have been completed and the construction site looks like a huge “relief quarrying”, which have already begun to “grow slabs for the foundation of the ten building entities that make up the whole building complex”.
Because the foundation work and basement are below the level of underground water (aquifer), are performed at the same time the work of pumping water, which will then be replaced by a permanent drainage system, to the enrichment of the adjacent lake Campus, which is evolving into a living habitat.
For strengthening the clay and non-stable subsoil of the region, have already completed the work of specialized πασσαλώσεων that will support the slabs foundation. Also have a half completed, the work is geothermal energy, which are a modern, inexhaustible source of renewable energy. Is formed by a system of hundreds of drilling depth beyond 120 metres, where within a closed circuit of piping and water circulation is achieved by the transfer of the thermal load of the earth in the heating and cooling systems of buildings, thereby limiting over time the energy costs for the University.
Schedule of the Building Project
The project, with a total area of about 35.000 sqm., construction expenditure in addition to the 55 million euro (not including F.E.(A), is expected to be completed in mid-2019 to μεταστεγάσει permanently, the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. To serve the research programs of the three Sections will be hosted also the research units of the Faculty and in excess of 90 workshops, cutting-edge technologies (Biomedical, Nanotechnology, Lasers, Renewable energy, Environmental Engineering, fluid mechanics, Seismic Technology, etc.).
The completion of the new premises of the Faculty of Engineering, in addition to the that will enrich the Campus with a building – “landmark”, will be a big leap in the broadening of the research activity of the Faculty of Engineering and, by extension, of the University of Cyprus in new scientific fields.
As stated by the Rector, Professor Constantinos Christofides, the School of Engineering, is the largest complex in the area of education that is erected, so far, in the history of Cyprus. We have not allowed the crisis to pay, leading us to self-pity and barren protest. On the contrary, in the midst of crisis, with coordinated actions and the support of the state, we have created the largest prospect for the University of Cyprus. The Engineering School is already a flagship research effort of the University and the major research center of Cyprus. The completion of the building facilities of the School, will contribute decisively to the further growth of the University of Cyprus, in the international rankings. In addition it will provide a better perspective in terms of research in engineering. Let’s not forget, he added, that the Faculty of Engineering is a link between research and industry.
