Two separate theft incidents involving impostors posing as employees of Greece’s Public Power Corporation (DEDDHE) were reported in Athens, while in Patras, security footage captured a group of minors breaking into and robbing a restaurant.
Fraudsters Target Elderly Woman in Athens
In the first case, a 68-year-old retired accountant fell victim to con artists who impersonated DEDDHE staff. Under the false pretext of an imminent explosion risk at her home, they convinced her to place her jewelry in a bag for ‘safekeeping.’
While the woman remained on the phone under duress, an accomplice collected the bag from a central Athens location near the General Police Directorate (GADA). Footage obtained by Star revealed the moment the suspect retrieved the bag containing her valuables.
‘He told me to wrap them in aluminum foil and put them in a bag. I was scared — he said there might be an explosion at my home,’ the woman recounted. ‘I left the bag, and then a young man came, picked it up, and walked down Alexandras Avenue.’
Minors Break Into Restaurant in Patras
In a second incident, four minors broke into a food service establishment in Patras and stole the contents of its cash register in just minutes. The Patras Police investigated and identified all suspects, filing charges for theft and neglect of juvenile supervision. The case highlights the growing concern over minors’ involvement in criminal activity.
