Iceland: Ice Cave collapsed on tourists, one dead and two missing

Accident occurred yesterday (25.08.2024) in the southeast, when ice collapsed on tourists. The account so far is one dead and two missing. The tragedy in Iceland occurred when 25 people visited with a guide to the Breidamerkurjokull glacier. Then the ice cave collapsed resulting in four people being trapped under the ice. Thanks to the immediate intervention of the attendees, two of them recovered quite wounded. One of them lost the battle with life and the second was taken to hospital by helicopter in a “fixed condition”. “Most tourists were outside the cave when it collapsed,” said local media “Visir”. Rescue services immediately launched an operation to find the missing persons. So far the surveys for the two tourists are “fruitless”. “A large number of rescuers and workers in emergency services took part in operations conducted in difficult circumstances,” police said. The Breidamerkurjokull glacier is located near the ice lake Jökulsarlon, one of Iceland’s most famous tourist attractions.
