Hurricane Ida: At least 46 dead – Dozens trapped in basements

The United States is mourning the deaths of tropical storm Ida on the east coast, leaving at least 46 dead.

In New York, dozens of people were trapped in the basements of their homes flooded by rushing water, while in New Jersey many were the ones who breathed their last in their cars.

From the White House yesterday, US President Joe Biden declared New York and New Jersey a state of emergency. More than 20 million people have been warned by authorities to be on high alert for fear of severe flooding.
