How will Metropolitan Park in Faliro be?

At a depth of four years the current administration of the Region of Attica aims to deliver the new Metropolitan, which was officially named “Aenaon”. This is an investment of EUR 370 million, financed by the NSRF Environment and Climate Change programme and is expected to radically change the coastal front. “Aenaon”, as Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, during yesterday’s presentation of the project in Faliro, “is a large window” of the capital and Attica at sea. Think a little bit of the paradox of a coastal city that was not looking towards the sea, its natural comparative advantage, and that is what we come to change now through a series of actions. The most important one might be the aenao park. We will work with the District to keep the completion schedule until 2028. We aspire to have a truly unique park, based on Renzo Piano’s original design, with the contribution of important Greek scholars.” Its total area will be 570 acres. It will be fully accessible for all with free entrance and 75% of the area will be covered by green. The remaining 25% will be offered for mild cultural activities and activities. Individual mild commercial uses are also foreseen. The green metropolitan park will also include areas of recreation, culture, swimming pools, stadiums for many sports, but also with modern infrastructure that can accommodate many different activities such as concerts, exhibitions, cultural and sports activities. There will be a reconstitution of the Attic landscape with 4,000 trees and 185,000 bushes. Walkways, bikeways and pedestrian bridges will be created, 27 metal stands and the reconstruction of existing buildings will be realized. Also, five key transverse axes will link urban tissue to Park. The project will also give life to Olympic real estate, as the district chief of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, announced, granted the District for 40 years the Tae Kwon Do building and Water Square, while the volleyball court will be converted into a concert venue. As Nikos Hardalias said, during the presentation of plans for the redevelopment of the park on the Falirian Bay, “on the orders of the Prime Minister and following the positive recommendation of the Ministry of Finance and the co-authored ministries, our proposal was accepted and progresses and is expected to be completed by March 2025 the addition and integration into the park of the wider area, i.e. the area of Taw Kwon Do and the Water Square, with its final concession from the EBRD to the Region of Attica for the next 40 years”. As he added, there will be a single management body, which will be responsible for the Region of Attica and will involve all municipalities and bodies in the region. It is recalled that the redevelopment of the Falirian Mountain by dividing into two parts. The first phase, with a budget of EUR 109 million, included a transversal shift of Poseidon Avenue with NSRF resources 2014-202022. The second phase, with a budget of EUR 370 million, includes the construction of the Park and is funded by the NSRF programme Environment and Climate Change. The European Commission approved an initial amount of EUR 93 million from the Cohesion Fund to support the reconstruction of a 540-acre seaside park along the Falirian Bay. The investment will turn the city’s sea front into a green and vibrant inclusive space.
