A wave of shock and horror has swept across the UK following the conviction of 37-year-old secondary school teacher Jamie Varley, who was sentenced to a whole-life order — meaning no possibility of parole — for the sexual abuse and murder of his 13-month-old adopted son, Preston Davey.
A Nightmare Behind Closed Doors
The toddler endured systematic, brutal abuse inside the couple’s home in Blackpool. When he was rushed unconscious to hospital, doctors fought for 50 minutes to save him — but it was too late. His small body bore 40 serious injuries, and the post-mortem confirmed he died from asphyxia, either by suffocation or having objects forced into his mouth.
A Calculated Deception
Varley staged an exaggerated, theatrical display of grief at the hospital — described by medical staff as shockingly insincere. He claimed Preston had drowned in the bath, but forensic evidence contradicted him: the boy’s hair was dry, he was still wearing his nappy, and there was no water in his lungs.
Police later discovered disturbing photographs and videos of the abuse on Varley’s mobile phone — evidence that sealed his fate in court.
Missed Chances to Save a Life
Tragically, Preston had been seen multiple times in the weeks before his death by healthcare professionals, social workers, and nurses — including three separate hospital visits, one after a broken arm. Yet authorities accepted the couple’s explanations, misled by their outwardly respectable profiles: Varley as a schoolteacher, and his partner, 32-year-old John McGowan-Fazakerley, a business professional.
McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the abuse and death.
A Life Marked by Tragedy
Preston’s life began under harrowing circumstances: he was born prematurely while his biological mother, Sarah Davey, was incarcerated.
