Holy Road Incident: Drunk Basketball Player Drives on Train Tracks

Shock has followed the arrest of a 29-year-old American basketball player from Greece’s A2 league after a serious incident in Chalkida that disrupted rail traffic. Early Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the intersection of Iera Odos and Konstantinoupoleos Avenue, the player drove his car onto railway tracks and traveled approximately 300 meters before stopping—halting train operations for hours. Video footage obtained by Mega shows the stationary vehicle on the rails. Police responded and confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol: breathalyzer tests registered 0.51 mg/l and 0.56 mg/l—well above the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l. The incident caused severe delays to suburban rail services, with some trains delayed over one hour; the Athens–Thessaloniki line departed more than 60 minutes late after the vehicle’s removal. Authorities also found the suspect lacked proper residency documentation. He faces charges for dangerous driving, obstruction of transport, and illegal entry and stay in Greece. He was taken to Athens Traffic Police Headquarters and will appear before the Public Prosecutor.
