In the early hours of Monday (01.07.2025), Hiro Kariophylla passed away after a long and difficult battle with cancer. The ALPHA TV channel, where she had worked for many years, publicly honored her memory. On ALPHA’s official social media page, a black-and-white photo of the respected reporter was posted alongside a heartfelt message mourning her unjust loss. The tribute read simply: «Goodbye our beloved Hiro…», capturing the sorrow felt across the station and journalism community at large.
The post drew emotional comments from colleagues and public figures alike. Natalia Germanou wrote: «Rest in peace, dear Hiro», while Katerina Kainourgiou posted: «Our Hiro». During an episode of «Happy Day», presenters Stamatina Tsintzili and Dimitris Verykios shared their own tributes, describing her as a fearless and dedicated journalist.
Verykios recalled how Kariophylla was the first ALPHA reporter on the ground during the Ukraine war two and a half years ago. Despite health concerns upon her return, she postponed medical tests due to breaking news — including the Tempi train disaster. Tragically, test results came back just before Easter two years ago, marking the beginning of her private struggle with illness.
Even when too weak to move, Kariophylla continued reporting by phone, embodying resilience and passion for her work until the very end. Her passing leaves a profound void in Greek media and the hearts of those who knew her.
