A large-scale rescue operation is underway today (5 March 2026) off Heraklion, on the island of Crete, to save approximately 100 migrants — including an infant — aboard an unseaworthy vessel.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the vessel was detected 50 nautical miles south of Kalo Limani — a coastal area near Heraklion — before it could reach shore. The 100 people on board are currently being transferred by a Coast Guard patrol boat to Kalo Limani.

A Liberian-flagged tanker is also assisting in the operation. This marks the second such rescue in as many days, following yesterday’s (4 March 2026) operation that saved 38 migrants.
