The Veterinary Directorate of the IP of Heraklion proceeded to take preventive measures against its spread, following suspicion of an incident in a region of the Municipality of Archan-Asterousia. As stated in a communication, the measures include ‘a prohibition of exit from the boundaries of the Regional Unit of Heraklion of live ovine and caprine animals, meat or bodies of ovine and caprine animals, feed, materials, waste, excrement, litter, manure or other objects that may transmit sheeppox. CORVERSE It is also prohibited to leave the boundaries of the Regional Unit of Heraklion of any other species of live animal that may mechanically transmit sheep pox.” According to the Deputy Chief of the Veterinary Directorate, Sophia Lambrinidis, samples have already been sent to Athens and results are expected, while strict compliance with bioaphafallia measures in farming is essential. The Deputy Rural Economy Officer Stavros Tzedakis noted that this is a situation that requires serious handling and asked farmers to show the responsible attitude they showed during the period of the plague measures.
