Negative was the first check, to identify another case, after the first positive case in a unit of the Municipality of Archanes Asterousia in Heraklion Crete. As the Deputy Head of the Veterinary Service of Heraklion, Sophia Lambrinidis, said, “the first surveillance for a new case of sheep and goat pox was negative, i.e. the first check carried out on Tuesday (21.01.2025) in the 3 km zone no other case was found, which is positive for the sequel.” CORVERSE Following the confirmed case of sheep and goat pox, the Veterinary Service of the Region of Crete proceeded to adopt the relevant decisions and implement the measures envisaged to address the spread of the zoonose. “We have a confirmed case of sheep and goat pox in the area of Asterousia, which is why we observe the protocol and the action plan, we created the 3 and 10 thousand protection and surveillance zones in order to check all herds for any other case,” said Deputy Regional Chief of Rural Economy Stavros Jedakis today. “We are asking for cooperation, as was the case with the plague of small ruminants, which we had a very good cooperation with our farmers. So now individually and collectively each, protecting its own exploitation, protects the entire livestock of Crete. So all together, in this direction, that we can quickly get out of this test,” the vice-regional leader noted. CORVERSE It is recalled that in accordance with the decision taken by the Veterinary Service, the following measures apply: 1 . Prohibition of leaving the boundaries of the Regional Unit of Heraklion live sheep and goats, non-food products of sheep and goats . 2. Prohibition of the sale of sheep and goats throughout the Regional Unit of Heraklion . 3. Prohibition of movement of sheep from the usual grazing areas and approach to the protection and surveillance zones designated . 4. The slaughter of ovine and caprine animals at the nearest slaughterhouse shall be authorised at the close of the prohibition on the movement of ovine and caprine animals for slaughter and after authorisation from the competent Veterinary Authority .
