Heraklion: Mayor Requests State of Emergency for Boutes Village Due to Cracks – The Terrifying Scenario of Land Subsidence

in

The mysterious phenomenon unfolding in the village of Boutes, Crete, continues to develop. Residents have witnessed cracks forming suddenly in their homes and roads without any preceding earthquake. Since Holy Wednesday of Easter, villagers in Heraklion have lived in constant fear as cracks have appeared inside their houses. Specifically, these cracks extend from the village church for about 150 meters. From there, two large fissures spread across the village roads and into ten houses. Although this phenomenon alone is alarming, both residents and authorities fear the scenario of a major land subsidence since the cause and extent of the cracks remain undetermined. Local government engineers are currently conducting inspections, and the Heraklion municipality will request that the village be declared in a state of emergency. A decision by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection will authorize further investigations. Kos Lekkas stated that an assessment of the phenomenon will take place today, determining which houses may be deemed uninhabitable. Experts advise residents not to stay in their homes tonight. ‘This is a phenomenon we’ve encountered many times in Greece. It’s unique because we have two cracks approximately 150 meters long. These cracks have breached the ground, infrastructure, and public spaces, likely due to some form of landslide,’ noted Euthymios Lekkas speaking to MEGA. Preliminary estimates indicate that at least 15 houses have suffered damage.
