The former mayor of Phaistos and the then deputy mayor have been sentenced to 8 years in prison for the tragedy that led to the drowning of four people in the Geropotamos River. The victims, a 30-year-old woman, her 29-year-old husband, her 21-year-old sister, and their 58-year-old mother, tragically lost their lives in February 2019. During heavy rainfall, they attempted to cross an Irish-style ford on the Geropotamos River near Heraklion. Unfortunately, the car was swept away, and within hours, all four were found dead. The mayor and deputy mayor were convicted of involuntary manslaughter due to negligence, receiving a two-year sentence for each victim, totaling five years without suspension.
