HELLENiQ ENERGY has announced the commissioning and commercial operation of two solar photovoltaic (PV) parks in southern Romania, with a combined capacity of 58 MW. The projects are part of a 2023 agreement with METLEN to develop and acquire four renewable energy projects totaling 211 MW.

A Strategic Step into Romania’s Renewable Energy Market

This milestone marks HELLENiQ ENERGY’s operational entry into Romania’s renewable energy market and underscores its consistent execution of a strategy aimed at accelerating international expansion in green energy.

The remaining two projects under the same agreement — also PV-based and totaling 153 MW — are expected to enter commercial operation by the end of 2026. Additionally, construction of a 96 MW wind farm in northeastern Romania is scheduled for completion in Q2 2027. Once all these assets are online, HELLENiQ ENERGY’s installed capacity in the country will exceed 300 MW.

Over 850 MW Renewable Portfolio in Romania

With this progress, HELLENiQ ENERGY’s total renewable energy pipeline in Romania now exceeds 850 MW. It includes a balanced mix of solar and wind generation, complemented by energy storage systems — enhancing flexibility and resilience across the regional power system.

George Alexopoulos, Deputy CEO of HELLENiQ ENERGY, commented: “Romania is a strategic market for expanding our renewable energy portfolio. The launch of our first operational projects there represents a significant step toward building a strong, regional renewable energy platform for HELLENiQ ENERGY in Southeast Europe. Developing renewables in dynamic regional markets supports energy security, reduces dependence on non-EU energy suppliers, and enables more competitive electricity pricing for consumers.”

Broader Regional Presence and Growth Targets

HELLENiQ ENERGY currently operates in five countries across the renewables sector — Greece, Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia — with a total operational renewable capacity of 564 MW.

Under its strategic plan, the company aims to reach 1.5 GW of installed renewable capacity within the next three years and over 2 GW by 2030. Its approach emphasizes vertical integration, geographic and technological diversification, and long-term value creation.

Following the planned integration of Enerwave in 2025, the renewables and electricity & natural gas business unit has become a distinct strategic pillar of the Group — a vertically integrated, regional electricity platform contributing increasingly to the Group’s financial performance.

As George Alexopoulos added: “With consistency, realism, and discipline in executing our investment program, we are advancing the development of our strategic pillar in renewables, electricity, and natural gas — broadening and differentiating our overall energy footprint.”
