In the unbearable grief following the death of 17-year-old Melina—who died after falling from a sixth-floor apartment in Helioupoli—her parents made a deeply moving decision: to transform their sorrow into an act of love for other children.
A Tribute Through Compassion
Melina and her teenage friend fell from the same building in Helioupoli, a tragedy that has shaken not only the local community but the entire country. In lieu of floral wreaths at her funeral, Melina’s family asked mourners to make donations in her memory to To Chamogelo tou Paidiou (The Smile of the Child), a well-known Greek nonprofit supporting vulnerable children.
In an official statement, the organization said: “Through this gesture, Melina’s memory will continue to light up the lives of children who need care, protection, and hope.”

A Community in Mourning
Hours after the tragedy—reported to have occurred at noon on Tuesday, May 12, 2026—Melina’s classmates gathered at school visibly devastated. Dressed in black and holding white flowers, many struggled to process the loss of their friend. Faces were tear-streaked and silent, as the weight of the event settled over the campus.
Critical Condition for Second Teen
Meanwhile, the nation remains united in prayer for Melina’s friend, the second 17-year-old involved in the fall. She remains hospitalized at KAT Hospital in extremely critical condition, suffering severe cranio-cerebral injuries and multiple fractures—including to the pelvis. Doctors have yet to perform surgery, waiting first for her hemodynamic stability to improve. The medical team continues its urgent efforts to save her life.
