The Areios Pagos (Greece’s Supreme Court of Cassation) has intervened following the leak of a handwritten note attributed to a 17-year-old girl who, along with her friend, fell from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Helioupoli—a southern suburb of Athens. The incident, which resulted in the deaths of both teenagers, triggered widespread public concern after sensitive personal material—including the note and video footage from the scene—was disseminated across digital and print media.

Supreme Prosecutor Orders Urgent Investigation

Konstantinos Tzavellas, Prosecutor of the Areios Pagos, issued a directive on 15 April 2026 calling for an immediate preliminary criminal investigation by the Athens First Instance Public Prosecutor’s Office. He condemned the ‘unacceptable, from every standpoint, publication’ of the girls’ notes and the circulation of video showing the site of the tragedy—material that reportedly revealed not only the victims’ identities but also those of their relatives.

Focus on Protection and Accountability

In his order, Tzavellas emphasized the urgent need to investigate how the sensitive material was leaked and subsequently published. He stressed the potential harm such exposure poses to minors and vulnerable members of the public—and underscored the importance of safeguarding the dignity, identity, and memory of the two teenage girls who died tragically young.

Preliminary Examination Underway

Following the Supreme Court prosecutor’s intervention, the Head of the Athens First Instance Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered an urgent preliminary examination. The probe will explore all possible avenues to determine how the note and video footage were obtained and released.
