Extreme heat gripped Greece on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, with air temperatures soaring to 43.5°C — the highest recorded this season — in Leukochori, Phthiotida. Across central and southern mainland Greece and Crete, conditions tested human endurance, as perceived temperatures far exceeded official readings due to high humidity and intense solar radiation.
Real-World Heat: Asphalt, Cars, and Urban Surfaces
Thermal imaging cameras revealed just how extreme the heat truly felt on the ground. Surface temperatures spiked dramatically: over 75°C was recorded at Kallimarmaro Stadium in Athens — a stark illustration of urban heat absorption. At Lykavittos Hill, thermal cameras measured surface heat nearing 60°C, while air temperature in central Athens hit 36°C at noon — with a ‘feels-like’ temperature of 40°C.
A drone-based thermal survey conducted by ERT highlighted how vehicle color affects heat retention. A black car reached 66.8°C, compared to around 42°C for a white one — parked side by side in the same location. Even after vehicles were moved, residual thermal radiation lingered in the surrounding air.
Where the Heat Was Most Intense
According to data from the National Observatory of Athens’ meteo.gr network, 28 weather stations — roughly 5% of the total — recorded maximum daily temperatures above 40°C. Another 138 stations — about 23% — exceeded 37°C. Thessaloniki experienced oppressive, suffocating conditions during the day, though cooler breezes and isolated thunderstorms were expected to arrive by evening — offering brief relief but also raising wildfire risk due to stronger winds and dry fuels.
When Will the Heatwave Break?
A significant weather shift is forecast in the coming days, meteorologist Nikoleta Ziacopoulou of ERTnews reported. The scorching heat will begin to ease, with temperatures dropping sharply — falling from the low 40s into the low 30s and below.
Friday is expected to bring strong, widespread thunderstorms across much of the country — marking the onset of a pronounced cool-down. By Saturday, noticeable relief will set in: Volos is not expected to exceed 30°C, while Attica will remain below that threshold. Humidity levels will fall, and the heavy dust haze currently blanketing many areas will clear, resulting in cleaner, crisper air.
