Heat Dome Approaching Greece: Health and Fire Risks Rise

in

Greece is set to be hit by a severe heatwave in the coming days, with a ‘heat dome’ trapping hot air over the country. Meteorologist Giorgos Tzatravyllias warns that the extreme temperatures sweeping across Europe are now reaching Greece, bringing with them serious health and environmental risks. High temperatures will dominate until Wednesday (09.07.2025), followed by a sharp drop of up to 10 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong northerly winds and possible storms in northern regions. Tzatravyllias has raised the alarm about increased fire danger due to dry vegetation and wind, as well as health deterioration from heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and increased mortality rates. Temperatures are expected to surpass 40°C in Central Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Attica, and the Peloponnese during the peak of the heatwave. The public is urged to take precautions, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
