Healthcare Reforms in Greece: Patient Feedback System and Emergency Tracking Initiative

in

Starting mid-June, Greece will officially implement a patient evaluation system for public hospitals, as announced by Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous. In tandem, the new application for tracking patient flow in Emergency Departments (EDs) will be extended to an additional 100 healthcare facilities by the end of 2025.

According to Marios Themistokleous, patients will play a crucial role in this evaluation process by providing feedback upon discharge from hospitals. The questionnaire will cover aspects such as medical staff service, hospital stay conditions, cleanliness, and food quality. “The patient judges the services, behaviors, and how friendly the environment was during their treatment,” said Themistokleous.

Results from this digital process will first reach hospital administrators. If issues persist without resolution, penalties ranging from bonus cuts to suspension of duties may apply. This ensures accountability and ties evaluations directly to managerial performance.

Additionally, the initiative includes a pilot program for tracking patient journeys in EDs, starting at the Evangelismos Hospital and expanding to 15 more facilities by mid-June. The ultimate goal is to streamline waiting times, manage patient flow efficiently, and address chronic delays in larger hospitals.

Themistokleous emphasized transparency, stating that results will be published to build public trust in healthcare improvements.
