In a clear statement today, Friday (06.06.25), Health Minister Adonis Georgiades addressed the unprecedented incident at Janio Hospital involving a nurse’s error during a blood transfusion that led to a 62-year-old patient suffering multiple cerebral episodes. Georgiades emphasized that strict protocols exist for blood transfusions and stated that an investigation has been ordered by the Health Quality Assurance Organization (ODIPY) and the National Blood Centre to determine the exact circumstances under which the nurse proceeded with the incorrect transfusion. Additionally, a Sworn Administrative Investigation (SAI) has been mandated, with Georgiades affirming that all possible measures are being taken by the State. He described the incident as an isolated case of negligence that does not reflect the entire National Healthcare System (ESY). Furthermore, he stressed that human errors occur everywhere but assured that the responsible party will be severely punished. The involved nurse reportedly quickly realized their mistake, which played a critical role in the patient’s health evolution. Currently, the 62-year-old is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Janio Hospital.
