Haris Doukas to Sue Over Private Cleaning of Unknown Soldier Monument

Haris Doukas is escalating the political clash between PASOK and New Democracy. The Mayor of Athens announced today (24.10.2025) that he will take legal action over the privatization of cleaning duties at the Unknown Soldier Monument. The dispute began when Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared that the monument’s protection would fall under the Ministry of National Defence. After the amendment passed, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias met with Doukas to coordinate responsibilities. Hours later, Doukas posted online, telling the government ‘good luck.’ In his latest statement, Doukas emphasized that the municipality will challenge the decision in court, citing Article 102 of the Constitution. He noted that Paul Marinaris confirmed the amendment transfers cleaning responsibility to the Ministry of National Defence and private contractors. This announcement follows a public confrontation between Doukas and Marinaris, during which the latter accused Doukas of failing to act like a mayor regarding the monument.
