Athens traffic police arrested a 21-year-old taxi driver after he allegedly charged passengers €175 for a ride from Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ to central Athens — more than four times the legally permitted fare.

Excessive Fare Sparks Investigation

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 3 July, according to the Hellenic Police. Officers from the Traffic Accident Prevention and Control Unit (O.E.P.T.A.) of Attica’s Traffic Directorate detained the driver following complaints about the inflated charge.

Authorities confirmed that the amount far exceeded the regulated tariff for the route, prompting the Athens Traffic Sub-Directorate to file a criminal case against the driver for collecting an unauthorized fare. He was subsequently brought before the competent public prosecutor.
