The brave decision of a liquid fuel dealer in Crete, who refuses to supply the motorcycle tank when he sees their drivers not wearing a helmet, was an act of great importance, but, unfortunately, isolated. Such an initiative could have been taken by the Greek state as a whole and not be left with how each individual will handle it, seeing his fellow citizens not wearing a helmet. CORVERSE In Greece where motorcycle sales every year are thousands and many young people who make their first km with a license should be more sensitive. In our neighbouring Italy where they have developed decades now a motorist culture and have this Mediterranean temperament, you will rarely see a motorcycle driver not wearing his helmet. And it’s not just because it matches their style, the so-called amiliamento, wearing a tie and suit with the helmet on the head, but it’s mostly for safety. And let us not forget that Italy has the same climatic conditions as Greece, so there is no excuse for heat. Leading to the I haven’t seen a cop give a ticket to a motorcycle driver, because everyone drives in a helmet. And in Greece, of course, I rarely see a police officer giving a helmet ticket, but here it is only rarely that the driver’s police stop wearing a helmet. And this is a phenomenon we see everywhere, winter summer, in cities and villages. CORVERSE Why we close our eyes is not something that should concern us as a whole as a society and not just as a government, the government, because the problem is timeless. Having experienced the tragic figure of a friend of mine and his family, who recently lost the 18-year-old child, who fell off the motorcycle at the time he was on his way to do food distribution, losing his life hitting his head because he wasn’t wearing a helmet, I realize it’s my duty to refer to this very important issue. The motorcycle companies, for their part, in all the advertising campaigns they make are marked “Put it well in your head”, which means put the helmet on your head. In the new Road Traffic Code, which we have been waiting for for a long time to see exactly what it will provide, there must also be something for the use of the helmet, with stricter criteria. It’s not enough to say that the bikers are banned from zick-zak in the car drive, and only allowed when cars are stopped. Until we wait for the new KOK, we stay at the fact that the helmet does not cost much (VAT has been reduced to 13%) as much as our lives. Let’s put it in the head and not the elbow, first of all because we’re in danger and then because we’re fooling ourselves and not the others.
Hand or head helmet?
