The negotiations between the Palestinian organisation and the Palestinian organisation on the “second phase” of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip began today. The first phase of the agreement came into effect on 19 January 2025, after fifteen months of war and included the cessation of hostilities, the release of certain Israelis and other hostages from Hamas and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israel. CORVERSE The second of the three phases will focus on an agreement on the release of both the remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. “ Contacts and negotiations for the second phase began, ” Hamas spokeswoman Abdel- Latif Al Canua, without giving more clarification. Earlier today, the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced that Israel is preparing to send a high-ranking delegation to Doha, Qatar to discuss the continuation of the implementation of the agreement. CORVERSE Both Hamas and Netanyahu’s government, in which hardcore politicians opposed to the armistice agreement, say they wish to reach an agreement on the second phase, but both sides are accused of implementing it. Israeli leaders say Hamas cannot remain in Gaza, but the organization has seized all the opportunities it could to show that it still controls the enclave, although it has lost many of its leaders and thousands of militants. Canwa said Israel is hampering the implementation of the first phase humanitarian protocol, preventing the repair of hospitals, roads, water sources and infrastructure destroyed in the war. Israel has not made any comment on Canua’s statements, however Deputy Foreign Minister Saren Haskell told the MSNBC television network’s “Morning Joe” show that Hamas has often violated the rules set. Yet he added: “We are optimistic. We want to bring back all family members and we need to ensure that Israel’s security is guaranteed. ”
