H Lego replaces the plastic pieces with oil-based

The Danish maker of Lego toys has announced that it will… spend $ 150 million and hire more than 100 people for the research, development and introduction of “sustainable raw materials” for the replacement of polymers based on petrochemicals, which uses it to produce the famous games of the structural elements. The company aims to make the full transition by 2030.
The company says that making games from a wide range of materials, but industry sources indicate that the basic raw material for the well known “blocks” is the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile, synthesized in the presence of polybutadiene rubber.
The desire of Lego changed the plastic materials has an environmental motive. “Finding alternative solutions for the basic materials will significantly reduce the impact of the Lego Group on the planet,” said the owner of the Lego Κιελντ Kirk Christiansen. The company also plans to manufactures the packaging from renewable raw materials.
In 2014, the company used around 77,000 tonnes of raw materials for the creation of more than 60 billion pieces of Lego.
The Lego is not revealed if it will use a more environmentally friendly modification of the ABS or if he’s planning to switch to a completely new polymer. The selection will be based on the raw materials, the chemical composition, the rejection of the material at the end of his life, as well as the social impact, according to the officials of the company.
