An eruption at Guatemala’s Fuego volcano has forced more than 700 people to evacuate their homes. The volcano is emitting ash clouds reaching approximately 4.8 kilometers in height and lava flows accumulating around its crater. According to CONRED, Guatemala’s disaster response agency, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the volcano lies about 18 kilometers from Antigua city. In a report released shortly after midnight on Friday (06.06.2025), Guatemala’s seismic service INSIVUMEH noted that the lava flow extends roughly 1.2 kilometers. “This continues to accumulate unstably around the crater and higher parts of the ravines, which could collapse and cause additional pyroclastic flows,” the report stated. Guatemala, roughly the size of Tennessee, USA, has 37 volcanoes, though many are considered inactive or extinct. Fuego volcano is renowned for its frequent activity. In June 2018, its most violent eruption in nearly four decades caused over 200 deaths.
