In Grevena, an 88-year-old man was arrested for causing a fire through negligence while using an angle grinder, according to investigators from the Fire Crime Investigation Unit (A.K.A.E.E.) of the Hellenic Fire Service.
Initial findings indicate that the incident occurred during routine work with the tool, sparking nearby vegetation. The suspect was detained under the flagrant offense procedure, and a €1,546.88 administrative fine was imposed.
Data from the Hellenic Fire Service show that, between 1 January and 4 July 2026, authorities have issued 516 administrative fines totaling €629,272.80 and carried out 156 arrests under the same expedited procedure — most related to fires caused by human negligence.
The Fire Service remains on heightened operational alert, conducting inspections and swiftly assigning responsibility where violations are detected. It reiterates that the overwhelming majority of wildfires stem from human error.
