An appeal for unity and calm made its inhabitants, Prime Minister Mute Egente, wanting to show that his provocative statements should not cause them terror. Greenland’s Prime Minister, following Donald Trump’s interest in controlling the region from the United States, said he understands that the country’s citizens may be concerned but recommends “to set aside differences and stand united”. CORVERSE Mute Egente’s government, according to the Guardian, issued an announcement Wednesday night, in which it reiterates Greenland’s right to self-determination, adding that it ” looks forward to creating contacts” with Donald Trump’s government. The statement, issued by Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeld, said the government recognises Greenland’s “determining and important role in the interests of US national security”, which is why, as he said, it houses an American military base. “Greenland looks forward to working with the upcoming US government and other NATO allies to ensure security and stability in the Arctic region,” he added. CORVERSE At a press conference Tuesday, Donald Trump refused to rule out the use of military violence to take over Greenland and the Panama Canal, while also hinted that he intends to use “economic power” to make Canada part of the US. These statements caused a global stir. Greenland is a former colony of Denmark and remains part of its kingdom, which controls its foreign and security policy. Prior to Donald Trump’s provocative intervention, a movement for independence from Denmark had begun to develop in Greenland. Mute Egente, who advocates Greenland’s independence, had used his New Year’s speech to argue that his island must be liberated from “the bonds of colonialism” to shape its own future. In order for Greenland to become an independent state, the 2009 agreement with Denmark dictates that there must be a successful referendum in Greenland. The elections are expected to take place in Greenland in the coming months, no later than 6 April. In this light Mute Egente called the citizens to unity. “Although we would like to show the differences between parties, I would like to appeal to stand united for our country and our future and not panic because of the situation that has arisen.” Regarding the relationship between Greenland and the US, the government made clear: “Greenland looks forward to discussing with the US the possibilities of business cooperation, the development of the Greenland mineral sector, including critical minerals and other related sectors”.
