Greenland Calls Trump: “Ready” for talks with US President-elect Prime Minister

Ready to speak with the , who has said he wants to put under US control the island said Friday (10.01.2025) its Prime Minister, Mute Egente. At the same time, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egente also sent a message to Donald Trump to respect his country’s independence ambitions. CORVERSE Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20, recently stated that it is a “absolute necessity” to put Greenland, this semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, under US control. He did not even rule out recourse to military or financial means, such as imposing customs duties on Denmark, to achieve his objective. At a press conference he granted to Copenhagen, Egente was asked if he had any contact with Trump and replied: “No, but we are ready to talk”. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mete Frederixen, who was present at the press conference, said on January 9 that she asked to meet with Trump, but does not expect this to happen before his inauguration. CORVERSE The ‘very fair bride’ Greenland Greenland has 57,000 inhabitants and by 1953 was a colony of Denmark. Today it is self-governing territory and in 2009 it secured the right to claim independence by referendum. The US maintains a military base in the northern part of the island. Egente referred to the pursuit of independence, saying: “We desire independence, we have a desire to be masters of our home (…) That’s something everyone should respect. But that does not mean that we are cutting ties, cooperation and relations with Denmark.” The independence movement has grown in proportion in recent years and Egente referred to it in a speech on the occasion of the New Year.
