Greeks Hide Their Money: Over 1 in 4 Keep Savings Accounts Secret from Their Partner

Secrets about money seem to be more common than we think among Greeks. A nationwide survey by Plum revealed that more than 1 in 4 Greeks hide a savings account from their partner. The findings of the research, conducted by the smart personal finance app, shed light on how Greeks manage their finances, when they start discussing them with their partners, and what financial secrets still remain. According to the survey, 26% of respondents admitted to maintaining a savings account that their partner is unaware of. Of these, half claim to use it exclusively for emergencies, while the rest use it more freely. Impressively, 1 in 10 people do not yet have a hidden account but plan to open one.

Financial Discussions Aren’t Always Hidden
Not everything remains secret, however. A total of 61% of participants have shared their exact salary or income with their partner, while another 20% say their partner has a general idea. Regarding frequency, 23% of couples discuss finances daily, 28% several times a week, and 22% once a week — meaning three out of four couples talk about financial matters at least weekly. Only 5% completely avoid the topic. More than 1 in 5 couples (21%) begin discussing finances within the first month of their relationship, while an additional 18% start within the first quarter. In contrast, 1 in 10 wait over two years before opening the ‘money’ conversation.

“Although finances remain a sensitive issue, it’s encouraging that many Greeks are willing to openly discuss them with their partner,” said Mairely Mitropoulou, Country Marketing Manager at Plum. “Nevertheless, the existence of financial secrets shows there’s still room for more transparency. The earlier honest conversations about money begin, the healthier and stronger the relationship becomes — both emotionally and financially.”
