In a historic achievement, Greek tourism reached unprecedented records in 2024, welcoming 36 million visitors and generating nearly €22 billion in revenue. According to detailed data released today by the Bank of Greece, tourist arrivals increased by 9.8% compared to 32.7 million visits in 2023. The revenue climbed to €21.7 billion, marking an increase of €1.1 billion (5.4%) from the previous year. December proved particularly fruitful, showcasing that the tourism season now extends beyond summer. Despite a decline in revenue from French tourists due to the Paris Olympics last July and August, there was a remarkable 15.1% surge in earnings from American tourists, continuing the upward trend since the pandemic. Annual visitors from the U.S. rose from one million in 2022 to nearly 1.55 million in 2024, indicating Greece’s growing share in the vast American market. Encouragingly, December saw over 882,000 arrivals, representing a 15.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023, with revenues skyrocketing by 33.3% to €435 million. This underscores the success of the government’s strategy to extend the tourism season since 2020. However, the data also confirms a gradual decrease in spending per trip, attributed to the increasing popularity of short-term getaways like ‘city breaks’.
