Remarkably resilient—even amid escalating tensions in the Gulf—the Greek tourism sector posted strong revenue growth in the first four months of the year, according to the latest data from the Bank of Greece (BoG).
Record April Earnings Amid Regional Uncertainty
Tourism revenues in April alone surpassed €1.1 billion, marking a 9.5% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth came despite heightened geopolitical uncertainty, including repeated violations of the fragile truce agreed between the U.S. and Iran on April 8.
Strong First Quarter Performance
For the entire January–April period, tourism earnings reached €2.8 billion—a 37% surge year-on-year. That represents an additional €753 million in revenue compared to the same period in 2023.
Resilience and Diversification
The figures underscore Greek tourism’s resilience—not only weathering fallout from the Middle East crisis, but also absorbing related disruptions such as reduced air travel and aviation fuel shortages. They also reflect Greece’s growing reputation as a year-round destination, with winter tourism increasingly gaining traction. Over the past seven years, sustained efforts to extend the tourist season have clearly paid off.
Detailed data on the country’s travel balance will be released by the Bank of Greece next Monday.
