Greek Souvlaki Ranks 55th in Taste Atlas’s Prestigious Street Food List

If you’re traveling to Algeria, don’t forget to try the number one street food, quesabirria, which tops Taste Atlas’s list of the top 50 street foods. While Greek favorites like gyros and kontosouvli are well-represented on the list—kontosouvli ranks within the top 20—souvlaki has slipped to 55th place, with kokoretsi trailing far behind at 96th. The Algerian dish Garantita, described as a popular snack made from chickpea flour dough, eggs, and spices, takes center stage. Following closely in second place is China’s guotie, Indonesia’s siomay, Mexico’s Quesabirria in fourth, and India’s Parotta rounding out the top five. Kontosouvli is praised for its rich marinade of herbs and spices, slow-cooked over an open flame, while gyros makes an appearance at 23rd place. Despite their global fame, Greek street foods seem to have been overshadowed by international contenders this year.
