In an interview aired on Alpha TV’s Autopsia program, the police officer involved in the incident with singer Christos Mastoras recounted the events that took place at the intersection of Stadium and Aeolus streets in central Athens on February 3rd. Officer Angelos Semitzis described how Mastoras’ vehicle suddenly swerved left and accelerated sharply toward him while attempting to evade a sobriety checkpoint. “I remember it was around 2 a.m. My colleague and I were conducting breathalyzer tests on Stadium Street. After stopping several vehicles, the third car coming towards me made a sudden sharp turn to the left and sped up directly at me to avoid the check,” Semitzis said. He added that he narrowly avoided being dragged by the car by moving quickly out of the way. The vehicle continued speeding left onto Aeolus Street. Semitzis noted that he managed to note down the license plate number and informed another police unit near Omonia Square, which eventually stopped Mastoras for inspection. In response to Mastoras’ claims that he did not intend to hit the officer, Semitzis stated, “I was standing between the two lanes of traffic. When you see a car speeding directly at you, it’s logical to feel fear and try to protect yourself. I believe if I hadn’t moved to the extreme, the car could have hit me.” A week later, the same traffic officer was involved in another incident where he was dragged by a 24-year-old driver who ran him over, causing a fracture in his ankle requiring titanium surgery. This accident occurred during another sobriety checkpoint operation.
