Greek Politicians Seek New Parties Amidst Election Uncertainty

in

The Greek political landscape is currently in turmoil, resembling shifting sands. Members of parties that are declining in polls and fearing they won’t be re-elected are increasingly looking to other parties for opportunities. These politicians seek safer seats with fewer votes and less competition. Meanwhile, smaller parties lacking established figures are also interested in attracting members from larger parties. The New Democracy party faces significant challenges as it lags far behind its electoral percentages from 2019 and 2023. Although it elected 158 MPs in the last elections, optimistic projections suggest it may only reach 30-32% due to upcoming dilemmas. The bonus for the leading party fluctuates based on percentage. In contrast, the Voice of Reason party has seen low performance and lost relevance since not taking a clear stance on the Tempi tragedy. On the left, there’s considerable movement within the ranks of SYRIZA, which dropped from 47 MPs in 2023 to between 5-7% in current polls. Efforts for reunification with New Left face significant hurdles. The Liberty Cruise party, led by Zoe Konstantopoulou, shows promise but raises questions about leadership and candidate selection. Additionally, discussions around labor reforms, including raising the minimum wage to €880 and potential pension bonuses, aim to address public concerns. The government must implement policies to restore faith among citizens and improve its image before the next elections.
