Greek police arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 29-year-old man in Elliniko, Athens, for a series of telephone scams impersonating employees of an electricity provider. The suspects allegedly contacted victims by phone, using deceptive scripts to trick them into handing over large sums of money and valuable jewelry.

Caught Red-Handed

The two were apprehended on the spot in Elliniko while collecting cash and jewelry from a victim they had just deceived. According to authorities, they had earlier called a man, posing as utility company staff, and used various pretexts—including fabricated technical issues or billing emergencies—to convince him to gather money and valuables, place them in a bag, and leave it outside his apartment building’s entrance.

The victim grew suspicious and immediately alerted police. Officers rushed to the designated drop-off point and intervened the moment the suspects picked up the bag—arresting them on the spot. Notably, one suspect reportedly changed his shirt immediately after receiving the bag in an apparent attempt to evade identification.

Items Seized in Raids

During searches conducted following the arrests, authorities confiscated multiple SIM card packages, clothing used during the scams, a dedicated mobile phone device for operational use, and the car the pair used to carry out their crimes.

Four Cases Solved, €40,900 in Losses

The Elliniko–Agios Ioannis Renti Criminal Investigations Unit has so far solved four fraud cases linked to the duo across southern Athens suburbs. Investigators estimate the total illicit proceeds at €40,900. Both suspects had prior contact with law enforcement over similar offenses, according to police.

The probe revealed that the group operated in an organized manner since at least June 2026. The suspects were brought before the competent public prosecutor for further legal proceedings.
