Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has emphasized the importance of fair play and respect in sports as the highly anticipated basketball finals between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos approach. In a Facebook post reflecting on government achievements, Mitsotakis stressed that ‘the better team should win’ while urging everyone to leave behind negative behaviors. The prime minister highlighted the state’s responsibility to ensure safe and smooth sporting events, insisting on strict law enforcement both on and off the court. He called for exemplary behavior from team owners, management, players, and fans alike.

In addition to addressing sportsmanship, Mitsotakis touched upon several key issues during his weekly update, including the legal status of the Monastery of St. Catherine in Sinai, ongoing efforts to combat university violence, and improvements in public services evaluation. The prime minister also announced new measures aimed at enhancing security within universities, ensuring they remain spaces free from illegal activities.

Regarding infrastructure development, Mitsotakis revealed plans to renovate over 400 schools nationwide through the Marietta Giannakou program, funded by donations from Greek banks and supplemented by annual government contributions. Furthermore, citizens can now access comprehensive housing assistance information via an online platform, stegasi.gov.gr, which calculates potential savings based on individual profiles.

The European Commission acknowledged Greece’s economic progress in its latest report, praising high primary surpluses and rapid debt reduction. Additionally, approval was granted for activating the escape clause regarding defense spending, allocating €500 million for developmental and social purposes in 2026.
