Greek Parliament: Special Committee for Primary Sector Established

A cross-party Special Committee of the Hellenic Parliament on the primary sector has been officially established, following a proposal by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and approval by parliamentary majority. The committee—tasked with studying challenges and drafting proposals to strengthen Greece’s primary sector and monitor international developments—will begin its work within the coming week and is expected to meet up to twice weekly. Giannis Oikonomou (ND) was elected Chair, Manolis Hnaris (PASOK) as Vice-Chair, and Vasilis Kokkalis (SYRIZA) as Secretary. All three candidates received 19 affirmative votes, with six blank ballots; opposition MPs abstained. The 26-member committee includes 14 ND, 3 PASOK, 2 SYRIZA, 2 KKE, and one member each from Niki, Greek Solution, New Left, Freedom Movement, and an independent MP. Its mandate lasts four months, starting Thursday, February 5, 2026.
