Greek Parliament Approves Preliminary Inquiry for Christos Triantopoulos Over Tempi Train Disaster

The Greek Parliament has overwhelmingly approved a proposal by PASOK to establish a preliminary inquiry committee against former Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos regarding the ‘clearance’ actions following the tragic train disaster in Tempi. The vote resulted in 277 votes in favor, with only 12 against, and four abstentions. Despite the wide majority, independent MPs Alex Aulonitis and Giorgos Aspiotis were absent, along with Christos Triantopoulos himself, who could not participate due to being under investigation.

Following the decision, the inquiry committee will have an initial two-month period to complete its work. The committee will consist of 27 members: 14 from the governing New Democracy coalition, three from PASOK, two from SYRIZA, two from KKE, and one each from Greek Solution, New Left, Freedom Path, Victory, Spartiates, and the independent MPs.

Minister of Justice Makis Voridis emphasized that all aspects would be examined impartially and thoroughly, ensuring justice is protected against those with predetermined agendas. He noted that discussions should focus on the specific criminal offense alleged rather than broader political motives. While acknowledging the societal demand for justice, he stressed that pursuing innocent individuals for political gain undermines true justice.

Voridis questioned whether evidence exists showing Triantopoulos pressured others into misconduct and highlighted discrepancies in allegations. He also addressed criticisms from opposition parties, stating they must provide concrete evidence if they believe Triantopoulos is guilty.
