A ship owned by Greek interests came under missile attack southwest of Hodeidah, Yemen, in the southern Red Sea on Sunday (06/07/2025) and is now sinking. The vessel was not flying the Greek flag, nor were there any Greek seafarers onboard.
According to the European Union’s maritime security operation in the Red Sea, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, the attacked ship was the Liberia-flagged MV MAGIC SEAS, which belongs to All Seas Marine, a company of Greek interest.
The vessel was targeted by Houthi forces. Specifically, eight fast boats carrying armed militants launched at least 20 anti-tank RPG rockets, along with four unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), toward the ship approximately 51 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah port in Yemen.
The ship’s security team managed to neutralize two of the four USVs, while the remaining two struck the vessel. Additionally, the ship was hit by three anti-ship missiles, two of which successfully impacted the vessel. Following the assault, the MV MAGIC SEAS began to sink.
The 22 crew members onboard — including 17 Filipinos, one Romanian, one Vietnamese, and three Sri Lankans who were part of the security team — were rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard.
It should be noted that the ship had not requested escort or protection from the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES mission, and no EU naval vessels were nearby when the attack occurred.
This marks the first attack on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea by Houthi forces since November 2024.
