Greek Navy Prioritizes Upgrade of ‘PAPANIKOLIS’ Submarines and Acquisition of New Units

The modernization program for the four ‘214’ class ‘PAPANIKOLIS’ submarines has been set as a top priority, with an announcement expected on March 27th in Parliament by the Prime Minister. The Greek Navy also aims to acquire new submarines to further enhance operational capabilities. By early summer, the first batch of 44 heavyweight SeaHake Mod4 torpedoes is anticipated. Strengthening the submarine fleet is a strategic goal to maintain the qualitative advantage gained through the purchase of the four ‘214’ submarines and the modernization of the ‘OKEANOS’ submarine. This advantage was crucial during the 2020 crisis between Greece and Turkey, when Greek submarines effectively neutralized Turkish surface units without being detected. The first two training SeaHake Mod4 torpedoes have already arrived at Salamis Naval Base. These torpedoes, which do not yet have explosive warheads, will be used for educational purposes before conversion into combat-ready weapons. Each SeaHake Mod4 carries 260 kg of explosive material and surpasses older models significantly. The navy expects to receive most of the new torpedoes by the end of 2025, replacing outdated models. The SeaHake Mod4 torpedoes are unparalleled against surface vessels, capable of reaching speeds up to 50 knots with a range exceeding 50 kilometers. Despite delays attributed to supply issues due to the Ukraine conflict, these torpedoes technologically outperform Turkish D2A4 torpedoes. Plans include upgrading the existing ‘214’ submarines at a cost nearing €400 million and acquiring four new submarines, with construction potentially taking place in Greek shipyards.
