Greek Lawyers Demand Disciplinary Action Against Supreme Court President Ioanna Klapa

In a majority decision, the Assembly of Presidents of the Greek Bar Associations has requested disciplinary action against Supreme Court President Ioanna Klapa. The Assembly convened in Athens on March 27, 2025, following a proposal from the Coordinating Committee. This move was prompted by Klapa’s directive for disciplinary action against judicial authorities on Rhodes who released suspects in a construction scandal. Specifically, the Assembly approved the Coordinating Committee’s proposal and decided: 1) To investigate Klapa’s disciplinary responsibility under the Code of Judicial Conduct (Law 4938/2022) regarding her interventions through circulars, guidelines, and disciplinary prosecutions against judicial officers. 2) To organize a conference on Judicial Independence in collaboration with judicial unions to highlight the need to safeguard institutional guarantees surrounding this principle. 3) To propose a one-day work stoppage by bar associations as a protest, with the date to be determined by the Coordinating Committee. 4) To inform relevant European Union institutions and the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) about the risks posed to European legal culture by interventions in the judicial work of Greek officials.
