The Greek Foreign Ministry has responded to provocative statements by the Turkish Foreign Minister regarding the ‘Turkish’ minority in Thrace and Cyprus. According to the ministry, the Treaty of Lausanne clearly defines the character of the minority in Thrace as religious. Greece fully respects and protects the religious beliefs and cultural peculiarities of the Muslim Minority in Thrace, ensuring all their rights as Greek and European citizens under full equality and citizenship. The ministry also highlighted that statements concerning Cyprus do not contribute to progress or confidence-building efforts. It reminded that the framework of relevant UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus is binding.
Previously, during the opening speech at the two-day 51st Session of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, Hakan Fidan made provocative remarks about Thrace and Cyprus. He referred to the Muslim minority in Western Thrace as ‘Turkish,’ claiming they face serious violations preventing them from enjoying even basic rights and freedoms. He emphasized the need for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s attention to ensure respect for the national identity, religious education, and cultural rights of the Turkish Muslim minority by Greek authorities. Regarding Cyprus, Fidan stated there are two peoples and two states on the island. As part of the Islamic world, the Turkish Cypriot state represents an observer in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He called on all members to support their inherent rights and collaborate directly with them.
