Greek FM Gerapetritis on Syria at Fox News: Respect for International Law

In an interview with Fox News, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis discussed developments in Syria and Greco-Turkish relations. Speaking about the situation in Syria, where he met with the transitional President and Foreign Minister during his regional tour, Gerapetritis emphasized the need to develop inclusive institutions that encompass all ethnic and religious communities. He highlighted the importance of ensuring the rule of law, fundamental human rights for all citizens, and respect for international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Regarding sanctions against Syria, Gerapetritis proposed a gradual and reversible relaxation, contingent upon the new regime’s adherence to international law. Turning to Greece-Turkey relations, he expressed concern over Turkey’s ‘blue homeland’ doctrine, which contradicts international law. However, he noted positive steps towards normalizing relations, including agreements on good neighborly relations and cooperation on irregular migration. Concerning China and connectivity projects, Gerapetritis advocated for alternative partnerships, such as enhancing strategic alliances with India through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. Finally, he underscored Greece’s alignment with U.S. foreign and security policies, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties globally.
