A major operation led by Greece’s anti-organized crime unit—often referred to as the ‘Greek FBI’—is underway in northern Greece to dismantle an electricity theft network. The scheme has caused over €9 million in damages to the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE), the country’s main power distribution company.

Widespread Meter Tampering Across Multiple Regions

According to the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.), members of the criminal organization tampered with DEDDHE electricity meters—both in residential and commercial properties—across several regions, including Attica, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese.

Arrests and Charges

So far, three key suspects have been arrested. In total, 105 individuals are currently accused of involvement in electricity theft. The ongoing operation began this morning in Thessaloniki and involves officers from the Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime in Northern Greece, working in close coordination with DEDDHE.
