Greek Deputy Transport Minister Kyranakis Heads to Rome for Hellenic Train Negotiations

Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis is preparing to visit Rome to meet with the parent company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and the Italian government. The tragedy at Tempi has highlighted deficiencies in Hellenic Train’s obligations regarding investments in Greece’s railway system. The Greek government now seeks renegotiation, demanding that Hellenic Train invest its own funds in new, modern trains to enhance safety and service quality. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also plans a meeting with Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni to address these issues. Greece insists on receiving top-tier trains from the Italian company rather than outdated models. This push comes after Hellenic Train was sold for €45 million with debts exceeding €700 million being written off.
