The Greek sports community is in mourning following the passing of coach Grigoris Giassaris at the age of 55. According to reports, Giassaris, a dedicated worker in basketball development programs, particularly in Thessaly, was found deceased by his brother on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Just a month prior, he had faced serious heart issues requiring surgery, with another operation planned that he unfortunately did not get the chance to undergo. Giassaris was an athlete for Olympiakos Larissa (1985-2002) across various leagues and later became a coach, working with several teams including Persai Larissas, AEK, and Ikaroi Trikalon. He served as a regional youth coach for ESKATH and assisted in national teams, most notably helping secure the bronze medal at the EuroBasket U20 in 2024. The Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) and its president Evangelos Liolios have expressed their condolences to Giassaris’s family. In honor of his legacy, a minute of silence will be observed during all EOK championship matches this Sunday.
