In a groundbreaking achievement, Greece’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority has successfully identified and seized $1.5 billion in cryptocurrencies linked to the largest crypto heist in history. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis on X (formerly Twitter) on June 24, 2025. During his visit to the Authority, accompanied by its president, Haralambos Vourliotis, Pierrakakis highlighted recent successes in combating illegal activities. This marks the first nationwide case of locating and seizing cryptocurrencies as proceeds of theft. The seizure involved an investigation into suspicious transactions from a registered user on a Greek exchange platform. Advanced analysis tools revealed that the funds originated from the largest cryptocurrency theft ever, attributed to a notorious hacking group. Legal actions have been taken, with a court order issued for the assets’ seizure. In 2024 alone, the Authority achieved remarkable results: securing €10 million destined for victims through international cooperation, issuing 200 asset freeze orders, and identifying over €3 million in properties related to sanctions against Ukraine. The Ministry of Finance is actively supporting these efforts with legislative initiatives and investments exceeding €1 million for system upgrades, ensuring the Authority remains effective and technologically advanced.
