In a clear message that Greece will not forfeit any funds, Deputy Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis announced that the country plans to submit its sixth payment request of €3.9 billion from the Recovery Fund in July. “We have no right to lose even one euro, and we won’t,” emphasized Papathanasis during an interview with Athens Voice. He noted that Greek authorities are working intensively to ensure full absorption of the Recovery Fund resources by the end of the program in summer 2026. The ministry’s plan includes absorbing €4.9 billion by mid-2025 and an additional €6.9 billion within 2026. “We are ready to submit the sixth application in July, having met all prerequisites,” the minister stated. Regarding Greece’s overall performance in absorbing European funds, Papathanasis highlighted that the country ranks among Europe’s top performers, both in the Recovery Fund and ESF+ programs. Investments aim to bolster digital and green transitions, housing infrastructure, and support for small and medium enterprises, particularly in tourism. The economic executive works closely with involved ministries and banks to ensure projects proceed swiftly while maintaining quality and transparency. According to Papathanasis, Greece aims not only to avoid returning unused funds but also to absorb 100% of available resources, proving its ability to manage large-scale European financial instruments effectively.
