Over the last 5 years, the illegals have been reduced by the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU). Another two cases of fines were eliminated, after the restoration of illegal Lands of Uncontrolled Disposal (HADA), in Kea and Folegandros. The landfills further reduce the number of fines cases. Specifically, from 65 who were fines in 2019 they are currently formed to 20, i.e. 70% reduction, over a period of 5 years. It is noted that Greece paid the amount of 80,000 euros, on an annual basis, for each of the 65 cases of KADA that existed in the first half of 2019. It is worth noting that out of the 45 cases of fines that have been removed, Greek taxpayers were exempt from fines in the EU, totalling EUR 3.6 million a year. The other 20 cases concern 17 AD, of which the three operate and have a double fine, 12 do not work and must be restored and both have a failure to prove legal disposal. The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr.Thodoros Skylakakis, said: “The elimination of European fines our country pays for illegal waste disposal sites is a major issue for the Ministry of Environment and Energy. We are working, methodically, to achieve this goal, in cooperation with local authorities, aiming at a double benefit: to address the phenomenon of uncontrolled disposal of waste, through the acquisition of appropriate infrastructure and the relief of the Greek taxpayer.” The Secretary-General for Waste Management, Mr.Manolis Graphakos, noted: “One of our main priorities in the General Secretariat for Waste Management Coordination, is to eliminate the embarrassing fines our country pays for the illegal Waste Disposal Controlling Areas. There has already been a 70% reduction in fines, but we continue to work to deal with other cases. The Ministry of Environment and Energy cooperates with local authorities for this purpose and finances AKADA rehabilitation projects. A major job has been done in waste management, the country acquires infrastructure and effectively degrades fines from the EU.”
